Over recent times, I have heard many people moan about the “youth of today” not wanting to work, never having it so good and so on. And sometimes, I am ashamed to admit, I have agreed with them. However, over the last few months I have read numerous articles about young people in the job market and think it’s time for a change.
Over recent times, I have heard many people moan about the “youth of today” not wanting to work, never having it so good and so on. And sometimes, I am ashamed to admit, I have agreed with them. However, over the last few months I have read numerous articles about young people in the job market and think it’s time for a change.
The June issue of People Management again pricked my interest in this topic. The CIPD’s monthly magazine contains a couple of articles on their pilot project “Steps Ahead” which provides “focused interventions which make a massive difference to the way young people approach the job search and how they present their skills at interview”. Often the argument made is that, although young people may have the qualifications, they lack the experience needed in organisational life. Yet, if we don’t give these, often talented, people the chance to gain the experience all that potential is going to waste.
So, I have taken action! This morning, I applied to become a mentor on the CIPD’s project to offer, what I hope will be valuable advice and experience to those who need it. I will keep you posted on my progress!
